An enclosed traditional shopping street, expensive but full of interesting shops and products, including great souvenirs and snacks. It runs east-west, a block north of Shijo-dori, and at its eastern end it connects to Teramachi-dori, another, newer shopping street that runs north-south.

Gallery Gado

Gallery Gado sells modern woodblock prints (ukiyo-e) with traditional themes. The gallery also has catalogs of the work of artists who are maintaining this art form. All prints are authentic woodblock prints.

Ryomakan

龍馬館

An interesting souvenir shop dedicated to the famous samurai Ryoma Sakamoto. Inside you'll find some of the typical tourist souvenirs, like Ryoma Sakamoto keychains, but there are also some interesting and unique finds. Those looking to purchase swords may find that this shop sells more authentic swords than those in Kyoto's larger tourist spots.

Rakushisha Paper Crafts

洛紙舎

A great souvenir shop with some more original and less tacky souvenirs. In particular, for those looking to purchase nice paintings or copies of famous Japanese paintings, this shop offers a variety of paintings on paper that are attractive and more sophistocated-looking than those that you will find along Shijo, near Kiyomizu-dera, and other high-traffic tourist areas. There are also authentic Kyoto-made paper fans. Many of the items in this store are difficult to find elsewhere, so if you're interested, it's best to buy them here.

Kōbō-san Market

On the 21st of each month, Tō-ji hosts a large flea market on and around the temple grounds. It's like a one-day festival, with long rows of food vendors joining an odd assortment of sellers — everything from elegant Japanese crafts and rare plants to piles of old postcards, photos, movie posters, and appliances from decades past.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine Flea Market

On the 25th of each month Kitano Tenmangu hosts a flea market, with vendors lining both sides of the pathway leading up to the honden and then extends around each side. Pottery, porcelain, traditional dolls, and clothing are among the items sold, along with food. If you can manage to get here on the 25th, it's a great place to find unique souvenirs for great prices.

Kamisoe Paper Shop

Ko Kado's creations stand out for their new-meets-old aesthetic – a legacy of his background as a graphic designer fused with five years of intense training at a centuries-old karakami studio. He is one of only 10 or so masters of the technique.
